Atthowe Fine Art Services is the third generation of companies in the Atthowe family. In 1928, John Atthowe founded Berkeley Port Terminals, a barge company handling freight from the long wharf in Berkeley to San Francisco. Charles Atthowe joined the company in 1937, the year the Bay Bridge was completed. Keeping pace with the times, the firm moved from barges to trucks, becoming Atthowe Transportation. Scott Atthowe joined his father in the company in 1963, and in 1975 he purchased the firm and it became Atthowe Fine Art Services, reflecting the change to a company exclusively dedicated to the handling of fine art.
